A testament to love and determination

Each year, over 7,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with multiple sclerosis; most people are in their thirties or forties. In the 1990s, Roger Hammond's beloved wife, Lyn, became one of those people. For Roger, it meant taking on the role of carer, as well as husband. After Lyn died in 2022, Roger channelled his grief into writing Lyn and Me, a memoir dedicated to his late wife, and a tribute to their 43 years of married life.

Gradually, the memoir took on additional layers: a detailed look at the condition itself and its progression, and a guide to dealing with the many challenges that confront people with MS and their carers. These range from navigating the complexities of the benefits system, to simple tools and adjustments that make everyday tasks easier. Roger also sets out the invaluable help available nationally, locally and online from the MS Society.

Over the years, Lyn and Roger ran the gamut of emotions but, despite Lyn's diagnosis, they shared a rich and fulfilling life as a couple, and as parents and grandparents. While there are sections that are deeply moving, there is humour too, and an extended chapter on Lyn and Roger's many holidays, at home and abroad, with helpful advice on what to expect and what is available for the mobility impaired traveller.

Lyn and Me is a rare combination: a book that is powerful, profound—and practical.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 January 2026 by CC

Format: Paperback

A very moving and honest account from a partner caring for his wife with MS. It tells it how it is giving advice and what to expect, deeply moving and has some humour in it as well.

“It’s very moving”, Andrew Lownie, Author, 27 January 2026

Michael Messer - Singer-songwriter, guitarist and lifelong friend". 29 January 2026

"As well as the trials and struggles they went through, this book explains to us what an incredible and full life Lyn and Roger Hammond lived together. It tells of a love story that endured five decades of absolute dedication and unwavering commitment to each other. In addition to dealing with MS, Lyn and Roger had two daughters and travelled all over the world. They were determined that Lyn’s diagnoses would not define them or limit what they would do, and this book contains many entertaining stories of their family life and adventures".

The original reason for Roger writing Lyn & Me was to help others that are going through life with multiple sclerosis, offering advice and just explaining with no frills or barriers, exactly what this journey is and how to cope with it. But Lyn & Me does so much more than that. It is an emotional, amusing and very moving story told with absolutely no filters whatsoever, straight from the heart of a generous selfless soul. I would love to see this story turned into a screenplay for a film"

Book Signing Tours

2nd October 2025

I was invited to the MS Society Community Connections event in Bridgewater yesterday, it was good to meet Maria, Alison and Sandra from the MS Society and also so many new people with MS and make some valuable contacts with care and service providers.

It was well attended and the talks by the MS Society and care and service providers were well received.

Coincidentally it also turned into my book launch as it went live on Amazon yesterday, I sold some paperback copies and let other people have the details for the Kindle version.
